Position Summary:

The Library Assistant is a?part-time position and?will assist with the management of interlibrary loan functions and e-reserves, and provide reference service assistance to patrons. The Library Assistant also provides support to students and faculty by providing instruction on reference materials. Some of these activities include answering questions about resource databases, directing patrons to useful tools, and researching more complex questions and following up with the patron, in person, on the phone, and online. The Library Assistant helps coordinate the staff of student workers to maintain adequate staffing and uphold an excellent level of service to the academic community.

Principle Duties:

  • Assisting with daily interlibrary loan functions
    • Up-keep of system, ongoing processing and delivery of requests
  • Providing bibliographic instruction to patrons
  • Providing reference services to students and faculty
    • Fielding ready-reference questions
    • Fielding and researching more complex reference questions
    • Holding research consultations as necessary
  • Assisting with simple machine malfunctions, such as printers and copiers
  • Processing mail, shelving reference materials, and conducting inventories
  • Supervision of a small staff of student workers

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of online databases, online catalogs, popular search engines
  • Expert knowledge of print resources-reference books and how to use them
  • Knowledge of relevant psychological resources (books, journals, tests, databases, organizations) preferred
  • Ability to provide quick and efficacious bibliographic instruction to patrons who need to learn how to search and/or access the library?s various resources and materials
  • Knowledge of Microsoft systems (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent customer service skills in-person, over the phone, via email, and online

Position Qualifications:

  • Masters in Library and Information Sciences (MLIS)
  • Less than 1 year experience (entrance level position)
