Let's test this candidate's promise
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
Voters often complain that politicians will promote something during their campaign but fail to deliver once elected. This year, in the 7th District House race, voters have a unique opportunity to check facts prior to the election. Candidate Wayne Powell has repeatedly run an advertisement suggesting that he'll answer all calls from voters.
This allows voters to do their own fact-checking. Just call and see if you can talk to him. His campaign headquarters phone number is listed on his website (804-794-4963). His ad says that he ? not his receptionists or staff ? will talk to you.
Voters are encouraged to test the candidate's promise. If we can't get through to him now for a personal conversation, there's no hope that we'll get through should he be elected.

Across the U.S. hearts and minds are changing
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
We applaud your editorial, "For equality," for standing up for marriage, and we agree that the Defense of Marriage Act should be struck down. As we have seen over the past year, more and more Americans are on the side of equality.
Equality Virginia believes marriage is more than just a contractual relationship between consenting adults. Marriage is about loving, committed couples who want to make a lifelong promise to take care of and be responsible for each other, in good times and bad.
While DOMA excludes gay and lesbian couples from receiving federal benefits, it is the Marshall Newman Amendment that denies marriage in Virginia. When President Obama spoke about marriage equality earlier this year, it was his personal relationships, friends and colleagues who helped him evolve.
In 2006, 57 percent of Virginians voted to strip any relationship recognition of loving gay and lesbian families by putting the Marshall Newman Amendment into law. Seven years later, we are seeing hearts and minds shifting across the U.S. ? including Virginia.

An unjust law is no law at all
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
Although improbable, one might speculate about events from past, fallen empires. We are experiencing small but dangerous attempts by our government to narrowly define what constitutes a church, religious order, a minister, school, charity or hospital.
President Obama has declared war on the Catholic Church. He is accompanied by an entourage of pseudo-Catholics such as Nancy Pelosi, Katherine Sebelius, Joe Biden and the Kennedy women ? all of whom deserve to be ex-communicated for their beliefs in abortion (the new term is women's reproductive rights) and gay marriage.
Is it remotely possible that in the future we could see a Chinese-style state church (Pope Pius XII excommunicated the bishops appointed by the Chinese government)? Our religion is under attack. Will our priests, ministers and Catholic administrators be jailed for refusal to obey a law that we cannot obey? I will stand tall for my religion. St. Augustine said that an unjust law is no law at all.

Chavez is more than an irritant
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
Every day you say something stupid on the Editorial Page. Recently it was, "Venezuela, yesterday's news." You pretty much said the same things President Obama said: "Venezuela, it's a tiny country."
I did note the president congratulated Hugo Chavez on his latest victory. But come on, now: "Chavez gets on the nerves of certain Americans. He poses no threat. He is an irritant, that is all." How can you say that? He is a hero to South and Central America, the Middle East and many African-Americans.
It's by far one of the stupidest things you have ever said.

Obama has paralyzed business growth
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
President Obama has done things I am not pleased with. The most important area is the economy ? and he has been a failure. He spent much of his first year describing the business community as spawns of the devil and promoting class warfare.
His politics have paralyzed businesses. They are not expanding and creating new jobs because they fear more regulations and taxes. They are self-insuring themselves by holding on to cash. I've read economists who refer to this as the "$2 trillion under the mattress." If Obama is re-elected, it will stay under the mattress.
Although I'm fearful of the damage a President Romney would do to women's rights and health care, and his foreign policy remains an unknown (but given the current crisis in the Arab world, it couldn't get much worse), I will hold my nose and vote for him.
