33,000 addicts soon eligible for insurance | Health - Channel3000.com

MILWAUKEE -

Hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin residents need treatment for drug and alcohol addictions, but many don't have insurance to pay for it.

That will change for some in January, when the new health care overhaul goes into effect.

An Associated Press analysis determined that more than 30,000 Wisconsin residents who have addictions but no insurance will become eligible for coverage. That does not mean, however, that they will find beds waiting.

The state has about 1,200 beds at treatment facilities and operators say many of those aren't filled because it's hard to find enough qualified therapists. They also say they are reluctant to add staff when they don't know how much insurers will reimburse them for addiction treatment.
